The Estey Organ

The history of the Estey pipe organ of the Presbyterian Church of Gonzales, Texas, dates to 1925. Though the church was founded 73 years earlier, the congregation met in its own wooden structure beginning in 1875. By 1924, member had raised money to build the current brick building and to purchase an organ. Since repairs would be difficult in the small rural community, the church ordered a pipe organ (Opus 2353) from Estey Organ Company, known for producing quality instrument. Skilled European craftsmen employed at the factory in Vermont, used kiln-drayed hardwoods, bronze tubes, and the finest leathers. When finished, the custom-made organ was hauled by train across twelve states and installed in the brand-new sanctuary at 414 Sain Louis Street. On December 6, 2008, after 83 years of continual use, the Estey pipe organ was rededicated and is still in its original state. A detailed history is maintained by the Estey Organ Museum in Brattleboro, Vermont.
